Early Life and Training

Consolata Boyle was born on May 23, 1949. She went to Holy Child Killiney secondary school in County Dublin, Ireland. Later, she studied Archaeology and History at University College Dublin, graduating in 1972. While at university, she was part of a drama group called Dramsoc. This is where she started to get interested in costumes.

She also trained in costume design at the Abbey Theatre, which is a famous theatre in Dublin. She learned a lot about textiles and how to recreate historical clothes. She also earned a special diploma in textiles from West Surrey College of Art & Design. She began her career in the early 1980s.

Designing for the Big Screen

Consolata Boyle has designed costumes for many movies. Some of her well-known works include Anne Devlin (1984), Angela's Ashes (1999), and Nora (2000). She also worked on The Iron Lady (2011), Miss Julie (2014), and the popular Enola Holmes 1 (2020) and Enola Holmes 2 (2022) movies.

Her long partnership with director Stephen Frears started with the film The Snapper in 1993. They continued to work together on many films, such as Mary Reilly (1996) and The Queen (2006), which starred Helen Mirren. She also designed costumes for Cheri (2009), Tamara Drewe (2010) with Gemma Arterton, Philomena (2013), Florence Foster Jenkins (2016), and Victoria & Abdul (2017).

Consolata also worked with actors like Kit Harington and Alicia Vikander on the war-time costumes for Testament of Youth (2014). She designed costumes for Antonio Banderas in the Spanish film Altamira (2016).
