History of Berghem
Berghem has a long and interesting history. The village was first mentioned in official records way back in 1286. Its older name, Berchem, means "settlement on a hill." This tells us that the town was likely built on slightly higher ground.
The St. Willibrordus Church
One of Berghem's important buildings is the Catholic St. Willibrordus Church. The church you see today was built between 1900 and 1903. It stands next to an even older tower from the 1400s! The original church building was replaced in 1858. Sadly, that building burned down in 1895, which led to the construction of the current church.
Berghem's Population and Municipality
In 1804, about 1,900 people lived in Berghem. For many years, Berghem was its own separate municipality. This means it had its own local government, like a small independent town. However, in 1994, Berghem joined with the larger municipality of Oss.
