Bergistani facts for kids
The Bergistani (also called Bargusii) were an ancient people who lived in the Iberian Peninsula a long, long time ago. They were part of the larger group known as the Iberians. They weren't a very big group, and they lived in the valley of the Saiarra river, which is in the upper part of the Llobregat river in northern Tarraconense (an old Roman province). They were related to another group called the Ilergetes.

History of the Bergistani
The Bergistani faced many challenges, especially from powerful armies.
Battles with Hannibal
At the start of the Second Punic War, a famous general named Hannibal was on his way to Italy. As he traveled across the land, he met and defeated the Bergistani. This was a significant event for them, as it showed the power of Hannibal's army.
Rebellions Against Rome
Later, the Bergistani rebelled against the mighty Roman Empire in 197 BC. The Romans sent a consul named Cato the Elder to deal with the uprising. He successfully put down their rebellion.
However, the Bergistani were determined to be free. They rose in revolt a second time. Sadly, this rebellion did not go well for them. The Romans were very strong, and after this second defeat, the Bergistani were forced into slavery.
Their Fortifications
An ancient historian named Livy wrote about the Bergistani. He mentioned that they had seven castles or strong forts. Their main castle, called Castrum Bergium, might be the same place as the modern-day town of Berga. These castles were important for their defense and for protecting their communities.
