History of Bergman
Before Bergman became a town, areas nearby were known by names like Oregon Flat and Clabbie. There was also a town called Keener about a mile south of where Bergman is now. Keener was quite busy in the 1880s and had around 1,000 people. However, Keener started to shrink quickly by 1892.
The town of Bergman was officially started on August 4, 1905. It was named after a Dr. Bergman, who gave the land for the town. Dr. Bergman asked for the town to be named after her daughter, Miss Edith Bergman. Miss Edith Bergman also became the first postmistress, which means she was in charge of the local post office.
Like many towns in Boone County, Bergman grew because of the railroad. The White River Division Railway, which later became part of the Missouri Pacific Line, passed right through Bergman.
Before more people started using cars and before better roads were built, Bergman was a busy place. It had many businesses and was a thriving small town. For example, Arkansas Highway 43 was built in 1927 and was paved by 1948. These improvements changed how people traveled and traded.
Bergman was officially re-incorporated on March 14, 1968. This means its town government was formally set up again. A new post office was opened in Bergman in 1974.
Even though Bergman has its own school district, which was created in 1929, it is mostly a place where people live now. Many people who live in Bergman might work or shop in nearby larger towns.
