Bernal Heights Summit (pronounced BUR-nəl) is a well-known hill in San Francisco, California. It is also called Bernal Heights Hill. The top parts of the hill are part of Bernal Hill Park. This park is managed by San Francisco Recreation and Parks. At the very top of the hill, there is a private area. This area has a building and a tall 50-foot (15-meter) tower. This tower is used for telecommunications. Bernal Heights Boulevard mostly circles the park and the hill's summit.

What Plants and Animals Live on Bernal Hill?
Bernal Hill is home to many different plants and animals. You can find beautiful wildflowers growing there. Some of these flowers include the footsteps of spring and blue-eyed grass. Other pretty flowers are checkerbloom, shooting star, and the yellow mariposa lily.
How Was Bernal Hill Formed?
Bernal Hill is a "folded hill." This means it was created by huge forces in the Earth. About 150 million years ago, the Pacific plate was moving under the North American plate. This movement caused the land to wrinkle up, forming hills like Bernal Hill.
What Rocks Can You Find on Bernal Hill?
Near the top of Bernal Hill, you can see layers of very hard rock. This rock is called radiolarian chert. It is a type of sedimentary rock. Its silica comes from tiny sea creatures called radiolaria. The red color of the rock comes from iron oxide.
Between the layers of chert, there are thinner layers of shale. Shale can be many different colors. You might see red, white, green, or even purple shale. Other rocks and minerals found on the hill include serpentinite, jasper, and clay.
