Bernard Donaghey (born December 23, 1882 – died July 1, 1916), also known as Barney Donaghey, was a talented Irish footballer. He played as an inside forward, which is a attacking player who plays between the central striker and the wingers. Bernard played for famous clubs like Burnley and Manchester United. He also played in Scotland for Hibernian and in his home country, Ireland, for several teams. These included Derry Celtic, Ulster, Belfast Celtic, and Glentoran. Bernard Donaghey even played for the Irish national team and the Irish League representative team.

Bernard Donaghey was born in Derry, Ireland. He became a professional footballer, meaning he played football as his job. He was known for his skills as an inside forward. This position is important for both scoring goals and helping to create chances for other players.
His Amazing Football Career
Bernard Donaghey played for many different football clubs during his career. He had four different times playing for Derry Celtic. He also played for other Irish teams like Ulster, Belfast Celtic, and Glentoran.
Later, he moved to play in Scotland for Hibernian. Then, he played in England for big clubs like Manchester United and Burnley. Playing for these teams meant he was a very good player. He also represented his country, playing for the Irish national team.
Serving in World War I
Before World War I started, Bernard Donaghey was a reservist in the British Army. This meant he was ready to serve if his country needed him. In early 1915, during the second year of the war, he joined the army as a soldier. He became a private in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
Bernard fought in a big battle called the Gallipoli Campaign. He was hurt in the head there and had to go to a hospital in Tanta, Egypt. After he got better, he was sent to the Western Front in 1916. This was a very dangerous place where a lot of fighting happened.
Sadly, Bernard Donaghey was killed on July 1, 1916. This was the very first day of a huge battle called the Battle of the Somme. He died while his group was attacking German trenches near Beaumont-Hamel, France. His body was never found. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, which honors soldiers who died in that area and have no known grave.
