Bernard played as a small forward and shooting guard. He spent five seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) between 1984 and 1989.

Bernard Thompson went to South Mountain High School in Phoenix, Arizona. After high school, he played college basketball for the Fresno State Bulldogs. He was a key player for them from 1980 to 1984.

NBA Teams

The Portland Trail Blazers picked Bernard Thompson in the first round of the 1984 NBA draft. He was the 19th player chosen overall. Thompson played for the Blazers, the Phoenix Suns, and the Houston Rockets. His best year in the NBA was during the 1985–86 season. While playing for the Suns, he appeared in 61 games and scored an average of 8.5 points per game.

Playing in Other Leagues

After his time in the NBA, Thompson continued his career in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He played for several teams there, including the Columbus Horizon, Grand Rapids Hoops, Rockford Lightning, Oklahoma City Cavalry, and Fargo-Moorhead Fever. During his CBA career, he averaged 18.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. He also played internationally for teams like Maccabi Haifa B.C. in Israel and TBB Trier in Germany.

Coaching After Playing

After retiring as a player, Bernard Thompson became a basketball coach. He worked as an assistant coach for the Arizona Rhinos. This team was part of the ABA. He coached with them for two years.
