Bernardino Gatti was an Italian painter who lived during the Renaissance period. He was born around 1495 and passed away on February 22, 1576. He mostly worked in the cities of Parma and Cremona. People also knew him as il Sojaro.

Who Was Bernardino Gatti?

Bernardino Gatti was likely born near Pavia or Cremona. We don't know much about his early training as an artist. However, he was greatly influenced by other important painters of his time. These included Pordenone and Correggio. Gatti's own fresco paintings often appeared alongside Pordenone's works.

Gatti's Major Artworks

Gatti spent 12 years, from 1560 to 1572, working on a large fresco in the dome of the Duomo of Parma. He even had help from another artist named Bartholomaeus Spranger on this project.

Some of his other important works include:

  • A large fresco in the dining hall (refectory) of San Pietro in Cremona, which he finished in 1552.
  • Frescoes in the dome of the Santa Maria della Steccata church (1560–1566) in Parma.
  • His famous painting called Assunta in the Duomo of Cremona.

He also created art in other cities like Pavia in 1531 and Piacenza in 1543.

Gatti's Students

Bernardino Gatti also taught other artists. Two of his most well-known students were Sofonisba Anguissola, who became a very famous female painter, and his nephew, Gervasio Gatti.

  • Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes, located in the Refectory in San Pietro al Po, Cremona.
  • Coronation Virgin with Saints Benedetto and Bernardo (1572), in the Abbey of Chiaravalle, Milan.
  • Assunta (1572), found in the Cathedral of Cremona.
