Bernardo Atxaga, whose real name is Joseba Irazu Garmendia, is a famous writer from the Basque Country in Spain. He was born on July 27, 1951. He is known for writing his books in the Basque language and then translating them into Spanish himself.

He is a very important member of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language since 2006. In November 2010, he also joined Jakiunde, which is an academy for science, arts, and letters.

About Bernardo Atxaga

Bernardo Atxaga was born in a town called Asteasu, in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, Spain. This was in 1951. He studied economics at the university in Bilbao. Later, he studied philosophy at the university in Barcelona.

Before becoming a full-time writer, Atxaga had many different jobs. He worked as an economist and a bookseller. He also taught the Basque language. He was a publisher and even wrote scripts for radio shows. In 1980, he decided to focus only on writing.

His first writing was published in 1972. It was part of a collection of works by Basque authors. His first short story, Ziutateaz ("About The City"), came out in 1976. In 1978, he published his first book of poems, called Etiopia ("Ethiopia").

Bernardo Atxaga has written many different types of books. These include plays, song lyrics, novels, and short stories. His book of short stories, Obabakoak, became very famous when it was published in 1988. It won several awards, including Spain's National Literature Prize. This book has been translated into more than 20 languages around the world.

Atxaga usually writes in the Basque language, called Euskara. However, he also translates his own books into Spanish. Many of his books, like Obabakoak, have been translated into other languages too.
