Bernd Meier (born 11 February 1972 – died 2 August 2012) was a German professional footballer. He was known for playing as a goalkeeper.
Bernd Meier's Football Journey
Bernd Meier started his professional football career when he was 21 years old. He joined the team TSV 1860 Munich in 1993. In his very first year, his team moved up to the Bundesliga, which is Germany's top football league.
For the next four seasons, Bernd played for 1860 Munich. He worked hard to be the main goalkeeper. In the 1995–96 season, he played in 33 games. This was the most games he played in a single season during his career. He helped his team finish in eighth place.
In 1999, Bernd joined Borussia Mönchengladbach. He played two league matches during his time there. After three years, he moved back to the 2. Bundesliga, which is the second division. He became the starting goalkeeper for Rot Weiss Ahlen.
In 2005, when he was 33, Bernd joined Borussia Dortmund. He was the third-choice goalkeeper for two seasons. Sometimes, he even played for the reserve team, Borussia Dortmund II. Bernd retired from playing with 94 top-level games under his belt.
Becoming a Coach
After his playing career, Bernd Meier became a coach. On 6 January 2010, he was named the new goalkeeper coach for SV Wacker Burghausen.
The next year, he joined the Germany under-17 team. He continued to work as a goalkeeper coach, helping young players.
Remembering Bernd Meier
Bernd Meier passed away on 2 August 2012. He was only 40 years old. He had been admitted to the hospital for food poisoning.
