History of the Club
The club started on November 13, 1930. Many of its first members worked at the local chemical factory, Wacker Chemie. This factory began in 1914 and still helps support the club today. Before SV Wacker Burghausen, there was a football team that was part of a gymnastics club called Turnverein Burghausen. In 1922, these footballers left to form their own club, 1. FC Burghausen, which later joined SV Wacker Burghausen when it was founded. The new club wasn't just about football; it also had groups for shooting, athletics, and youth activities.
Just three years after it started, in 1933, SV Wacker Burghausen won the East Bavarian championship. After that, the team played in smaller local leagues for a long time. Things changed in 1993 when they won the Landesliga Bayern-Süd title, which was then the fifth level of German football. Two years later, in 1995, they won the Bayernliga championship (the fourth level). This success helped them move up to the Regionalliga Süd, which was the third level.
In the 2002–03 season, the team achieved a big goal: they moved up to the 2. Bundesliga, which is the second-highest football league in Germany! They played there until the end of the 2006–07 season, when they moved back down.
In 2007–08, Wacker finished seventh in the Regionalliga. This was good enough to qualify for a new league called the 3. Liga for the next season. In the 2008–09 season, they finished 18th, which usually means moving down a league. However, they were lucky because another team, Kickers Emden, had to leave the league due to money problems, so Wacker Burghausen stayed up.
The club finished 18th again in another season, which was a relegation spot. But once more, they were saved from moving down because Rot Weiss Ahlen went out of business. After playing well in 2011–12 and 2012–13, the club finished 19th in the league in 2013–14 and was finally moved down to the Regionalliga Bayern.
Reserve Team History
The reserve team, SV Wacker Burghausen II, also had some success. They played in the Bayernliga (the fourth level) from 2005 to 2007. This was special because it meant both the main team and the reserve team were playing at a high level. In 2012, the reserve team won their league, the Landesliga, and moved up to the expanded Bayernliga. However, in 2014, the club decided to stop the reserve team from competing at that level.
