Bernie Williams' Baseball Journey
Playing in Major League Baseball
Bernie Williams played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for parts of four seasons. He was with the San Francisco Giants from 1970 to 1972 and the San Diego Padres in 1974.
During his MLB career, Bernie played in 102 games. He had a batting average of .192, which means he got a hit about 19.2% of the time he was at bat. He hit four home runs and had 15 runs batted in (RBI). An RBI means he helped a teammate score a run.
Bernie was often used as a pinch hitter. This is when a player comes off the bench to bat in place of another player. Two of his four home runs in MLB were hit as a pinch hitter. Even though he did well in Minor League Baseball, he didn't quite reach that same level of success in the major leagues.
A Big Trade
In 1973, Bernie was playing really well for the Phoenix Firebirds, a team in Triple-A (which is just one step below the major leagues). He had a batting average of .313. Because of his good performance, he was traded from the Giants to the Padres. He was traded along with famous player Willie McCovey for another player named Mike Caldwell.
Success in Japan
After his time in Major League Baseball, Bernie Williams found much more success playing baseball in Japan. He joined the Hankyu Braves team in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). He played there for six seasons, from 1975 to 1980.
In Japan, Bernie's batting average was .258. He hit 96 home runs and had 294 RBIs. His strong performance led to him being chosen for Japan's Pacific League All-Star team in 1976. This shows he was one of the best players in the league that year!
