Berra Tor is a unique granite rock formation located on the southwestern edge of Dartmoor in England. It's not a tall mountain, standing at only 132 meters (about 433 feet) above sea level. This makes it one of the lowest "tors" you'll find on Dartmoor. Unlike some of the huge, famous tors like Great Mis Tor or Yes Tor, Berra Tor is quite hidden and less known. It peeks out from among some trees and looks more like a giant rock than a big hill. Its closest town is Buckland Monachorum.

What is a Tor?

A "tor" is a special type of rock formation. It's usually a large, free-standing rock outcrop that rises from a hill or mountain. Tors are often made of very hard rock, like granite. Over millions of years, wind, rain, and ice slowly wear away the softer rock around them. This process leaves behind the tougher, more resistant rock formations we call tors. Dartmoor is famous for its many tors, which give the landscape a unique and rugged look.

Berra Tor's Location and Appearance

Berra Tor sits right on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. This park is a huge area of moorland, forests, and rivers in Devon, England. Berra Tor is quite isolated, meaning it's a bit out of the way. It's not as easy to spot as some of the taller tors. Instead of being on top of a high, open hill, Berra Tor seems to emerge from a cluster of trees. This makes it look more like a massive boulder than a typical tor.

Its lower elevation means it doesn't offer the wide, sweeping views that higher tors provide. However, its hidden nature adds to its charm. It feels like a secret spot waiting to be discovered.

Exploring Berra Tor

Even though Berra Tor is small and hidden, it's still a part of the amazing Dartmoor landscape. The easiest way to reach it is from an area called Roborough Down. If you enjoy exploring less-traveled paths, Berra Tor offers a quiet adventure. It's a great place to see how different tors can be. While some tors are towering landmarks, Berra Tor reminds us that even smaller, more modest rock formations have their own unique beauty and story.
