Joining the Navy

Bertram Thesiger started his naval career very young, joining the Royal Navy in 1887. This was a time when many young people began their training early. He quickly showed great skill and dedication.

By 1911, he was promoted to the rank of commander. He was also given a special award, becoming a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). This award recognized his important service.

Fighting in World War I

Sir Bertram played a key role in World War I. He was the commanding officer of a ship called HMS Inconstant. This ship was part of the famous Battle of Jutland in 1916. This was one of the biggest naval battles in history.

After his service in the war, he received another important award. He was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1916. This honor showed how much his country appreciated his courage.

Leading the Fleet

After the war, Bertram Thesiger continued to advance in his career. In 1925, he became the Admiral Superintendent of Portsmouth Dockyard. This meant he was in charge of a very important naval base.

Then, in 1927, he took on an even bigger role. He became the Commander-in-Chief, East Indies Station. This made him the top naval officer in a large area, including parts of Asia and the Indian Ocean. He retired from the Navy in 1932 as an admiral.

Service in World War II

Even after retiring, Sir Bertram was called back to serve his country during World War II. From 1940 to 1942, he worked as a Convoy Commodore. This meant he helped guide groups of ships safely through dangerous waters.

Later, from 1942 to 1944, he was the Flag Officer in charge at Falmouth. This was another important job, helping to manage naval operations. For his service during this war, he received more honors. He was made a Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE) in 1942. He also received an American award, the Commander of the Legion of Merit.

Life After the Navy

After his long and distinguished naval career, Sir Bertram Thesiger settled down. He became a deputy lieutenant of Hampshire, which is a ceremonial role in the county. He lived at a place called "Clerks" in Bramshott, Hampshire.
