Bertrand de Blanchefort (born around 1109 – died January 13, 1169) was an important leader of the Knights Templar. He served as the sixth Grand Master of this famous knightly order from 1157 until his death in 1169. He is remembered for making big changes that helped the Templars become stronger and more organized.

Who Was Bertrand de Blanchefort?

Early Life and Training

Bertrand de Blanchefort was born around the year 1109. He was the youngest son in a family from Guyenne, a region in France. From a young age, he trained in combat, learning the skills needed to be a knight.

However, as he grew older and became a leader, he focused less on fighting. Instead, he believed in making the Templar order better through new rules and peaceful talks. This helped the Templars be seen as protectors, not just warriors.

Military Adventures and Challenges

As Grand Master, Bertrand quickly joined King Baldwin III of Jerusalem in battles. They fought against a powerful leader named Nur ad-Din Zangi. In 1157, after a battle near Banyas, King Baldwin's forces were defeated.

Bertrand de Blanchefort was captured in an ambush. He was held prisoner in Aleppo for three years. He was finally set free when the Byzantine emperor Manuel I Comnenus made a peace agreement with Nur ad-Din.

Later, in 1163, Bertrand went with King Amalric I of Jerusalem on a military trip to Egypt. This trip did not go well, even though the Christian army was very large. Bertrand decided not to join a second trip to Egypt in 1168. He knew it would likely lead to many losses.

Important Reforms for the Templars

Bertrand de Blanchefort made many important changes within the Knights Templar. He asked the Pope to let the Grand Master use the title "Master by Grace of God." This showed how important the Templars were becoming in the church. The Pope agreed to this request.

His most important changes were inside the order itself. He wrote a set of rules called the "Retraits." These rules gave knights clearer jobs and ways of doing things. He also created checks and balances for the leaders. This meant that future Grand Masters could not make big decisions alone. They needed the support of the other knights.

Bertrand also worked on making the Templars good at talking and negotiating. After the failed trip to Egypt, the Templars played a key role. They helped create a peace treaty, showing their skill in diplomacy.
