Beta Vukanović (born April 18, 1872 – died October 31, 1972) was a famous Serbian painter. She was also known as Babette Bachmayer. Beta lived to be 100 years old, making her a centenarian.
Who Was Beta Vukanović?
Beta Vukanović was born in Bamberg, a city in Germany. Her family was Serbian. She began studying painting in Munich at a special art school called the Kunstgewerbeschule. She also learned from another artist named Anton Ažbe.
From 1898, Beta mostly lived in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. Her early paintings showed the influence of "plein-air" painting. This means painting outdoors to capture natural light. Later, her style changed to Impressionism, which uses small, thin brushstrokes to show light and movement. Before World War I, her art became more realistic. She painted many pictures of the Serbian countryside and its people.
Beta Vukanović was also very good at drawing funny pictures called caricatures. She created about 500 humorous portraits of people she knew. These pictures showed important people from Belgrade's social and cultural life. Beta Vukanović passed away in Belgrade when she was 100 years old.
Her Family Life
Beta Vukanović was married to Rista Vukanović. He was also a painter and an Impressionist. Rista was born on April 3, 1873, near Trebinje, in a region called Herzegovina. He died on January 7, 1918, in Paris.
Rista Vukanović was important for bringing new ideas to Serbian art. He studied art in St Petersburg and Munich. Later, he taught art at different schools.
