Beth Carvalho's Life and Music
Early Life and Start in Music
Beth Carvalho grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her family was middle-class. Her dad, João Francisco Leal de Carvalho, was a lawyer. Beth loved music from a young age.
Her father often took her to rehearsals at samba schools. These are places where people practice samba music and dance. Her mother loved classical music. She even encouraged Beth to become a ballerina.
As a teenager, Beth started playing the guitar. She became involved with a new music style called Bossa Nova. When she was 19, she won a national TV song contest. This helped her become famous.
Becoming a Samba Star
In 1967, Beth released an album called "Muito Na Onda." Then, in 1968, she released her first solo record, "Andança." The song "Andança" won a big music festival. This made her very well-known.
Even though she started with Bossa Nova, she soon focused on samba. She worked with legendary samba composers like Nelson Sargento.
Helping Other Artists Shine
Beth Carvalho was a very important artist in samba history. She helped bring attention to the work of amazing composers. These included Cartola, Nelson Cavaquinho, and Guilherme de Brito. They were not getting the recognition they deserved.
Many of her albums featured songs by these composers. She also recorded music from other famous sambistas (samba musicians). Her favorite samba school was Mangueira. But she still recorded many songs from composers of Portela, another big samba school in Rio.
Later, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Beth helped new artists. She introduced the public to rising pagode (a type of samba) artists. These included Almir Guineto, Jorge Aragão, and the Fundo de Quintal group.
In 1983, she introduced Zeca Pagodinho. He became a major samba star in the 1990s. Beth always tried to help underrated composers get noticed. Because of this, she is known as madrinha do samba. This means "the godmother of samba."
She helped modernize samba in the 1980s. At the same time, she made sure to keep the traditional samba sound. She avoided popular music trends that changed samba too much.
Later Career and Legacy
In the 1990s, Beth's popularity was still strong. She even recorded an album dedicated to samba from São Paulo. This showed that samba was not just from Rio. In 1998, she released an album called Pérolas do Pagode (Pagode Pearls). It was all about classic pagode songs.
In the 2000s, Beth worked a lot. She released many CDs and DVDs. Her career lasted over 40 years. She became a historical figure in Brazilian culture. She is known as the female sambista with the most important work in Brazil.
