History of Bethune
People from Europe first settled in this area in the early 1800s. They found members of the Kadapaw tribe already living there. The settlers first called their new town Lynchwood. In 1828, they opened a post office. Later, when railroads came to the area, the town was officially recognized in 1900. Its name was changed to Bethune to honor Daniel Murdock Bethune.

Fun Things to Do
Bethune used to have a yearly event called the Bethune Chicken Strut. This festival happened every April. It featured a parade on Main Street and a classic car show. There were also carnival rides and live music. The festival started in the early 1980s but no longer takes place.
The town also hosts the Bethune Christmas Parade. This is one of many parades held in Kershaw County during the Christmas season.
