Beverly Ann Reid O'Connell (May 12, 1965 – October 8, 2017) was an important judge in the United States. She served as a United States district judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of California. This means she worked in a special court that handles big cases for the central part of California.

About Beverly Reid O'Connell

Beverly Ann Reid was born on May 12, 1965, in Ventura, California. She went to college at the University of California at Los Angeles and earned her first degree in 1986.

Becoming a Lawyer

She then went to law school at Pepperdine University School of Law. She graduated in 1990 with a special honor called magna cum laude, which means "with great praise."

After law school, Beverly O'Connell worked at a law firm called Morrison & Foerster from 1990 to 1995. A law firm is a business where lawyers work together to help people with legal problems. She handled many different types of civil cases there. Civil cases are legal disputes between people or organizations, not about crimes.

Working for the Government

From 1995 to 2005, she worked as an Assistant United States Attorney. This is a lawyer who represents the U.S. government in court.

Later, from 2005 to 2013, she became a judge herself. She served as a Superior Court Judge for Los Angeles County. A Superior Court is a main trial court in a state, handling many kinds of cases.

She also spent five months in 2010 and 2011 working as a judge on the California Court of Appeal. This is a higher court that reviews decisions made by lower courts. She also helped lead the North Valley District of the Superior Court as an Assistant Supervising Judge.

Becoming a Federal Judge

On November 14, 2012, President Barack Obama chose Beverly O'Connell to become a United States District Judge. This is a very important job in the federal court system. She was nominated to fill a position that became open when Judge Valerie Baker Fairbank retired.

The Approval Process

For her to become a federal judge, the Senate Judiciary Committee had to review her nomination. They approved her nomination on February 14, 2013.

Then, the entire U.S. Senate voted on her nomination. On April 15, 2013, the Senate approved her nomination with a vote of 92 to 0, which means everyone agreed she was a good choice. She officially started her new job as a judge on April 30, 2013.

Beverly O'Connell passed away on October 8, 2017, at the age of 52, after a sudden illness.
