Growing Up

Her Career as a Cartoonist

Bianca Xunise gets ideas from many artists. These include Finnish artist Tove Jansson and Austrian children's book illustrator Ludwig Bemelmans. She also looks up to Japanese manga artist Naoko Takeuchi.

Her journey in comics began in 2015. An online group for women called Hello Giggles gave her a regular column. Later, her work was shown in places like the Nib and Shondaland. Then, King Features Syndicate asked her to create a special Popeye comic.

In 2018, Bianca won an important prize. She received the Ignatz Award for "Promising New Talent." This was for her comic called "Say Her Name." It explored feelings about being Black in America.

In 2020, Bianca Xunise joined the Six Chix comic strip. This made her the second Black woman to have her work shared nationally in a comic strip. The first was Barbara Brandon-Croft. Her comic, Where I'm Coming From, was shared from 1991 to 2005. With her debut in Six Chix, Bianca also became the first Black nonbinary cartoonist to be nationally shared.
