It shares addresses with nearby towns like Owens Cross Roads and Huntsville.

History of Big Cove

How Big Cove Got Its Name

The area between Monte Sano and Keel Mountain has been called Big Cove since 1807. The name "Big Cove" simply describes the land around it. It's like a large, sheltered valley surrounded by mountains.

Early Settlers and Location

Big Cove sits at the base of Green, Huntsville, and Monte Sano mountains. John Clan Grayson was the first known permanent resident in this area. He is the one who gave Big Cove its name. To the south, Big Cove borders Owens Cross Roads, Alabama. Most of Big Cove uses the same postal code as Owens Cross Roads. The northern part of Big Cove, which locals call the "upper end," uses the postal code for Brownsboro, Alabama. Much of this northern area has also become part of the city of Huntsville.

From Farms to Homes

For many years, Big Cove was mostly a farming community. Farmers grew crops like soybeans, corn, and cotton. These crops were important for making money. However, over time, many of these old farms have been sold. The land, once owned by families for generations, is now being used for new housing developments. This means that where crops once grew, new neighborhoods are now appearing.
