Big Mink Lake is a beautiful freshwater lake located in Ontario, Canada. It is part of the huge St. Lawrence River system. This means its waters eventually flow into the St. Lawrence River.

The lake is found in a place called Hastings Highlands in Hastings County. It's about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) west of the community of Lake St. Peter. You can find Lake St. Peter along Highway 127. Big Mink Lake is also about 25 kilometres (16 mi) northwest of the town of Bancroft.

About Big Mink Lake

Big Mink Lake is a long and narrow lake. It has several spots where the lake gets very narrow. These narrow parts are like natural bottlenecks. The northern end of the lake splits into two sections, like a fork.

Lake Shape and Size

One part of the fork is called Card Bay. It forms the northwest arm. There are three main narrow sections along the lake. From north to south, they are called First Narrows, Red Pine Narrows, and Crooked Narrows.

The lake stretches for about 7.2 kilometres (4.5 mi) in length. It is about 0.7 kilometres (0.4 mi) wide at its widest points. The surface of the lake sits at an elevation of 402 metres (1,319 ft) above sea level.

Water Flow and Connections

The main stream that flows into Big Mink Lake is called Mink Creek. This creek comes from the Upper Mink Lakes, located to the northeast. Seven other smaller creeks also flow into Big Mink Lake. These creeks come from different directions, including Sud Lake to the east.

The water from Big Mink Lake flows out through Mink Creek as well. This outflow is controlled by the Mink Lake Dam. The water then travels southwest into Moffat Pond. From there, it continues its journey through the York River. After that, it joins the Madawaska River. Finally, it flows into the Ottawa River before reaching the St. Lawrence River.
