Plot Summary: The Circus Mystery
A Werewolf at the Circus
Scooby-Doo and his friends travel to Atlantic City. Fred is super excited to visit The Brancusi Circus. They arrive to find the circus closed until the next day. But, they notice the front door is unlocked and decide to look inside.
While exploring, they meet Marius Brancusi, the ringleader. He is chasing a werewolf that has broken into the circus! The werewolf attacks the gang. Luckily, Velma uses a spotlight to scare it away.
Marius thanks the gang. He explains that he inherited the circus from his uncle. This werewolf has been following the circus for months. It has scared away many performers and stolen jewelry. Marius even thinks the werewolf might be one of his own artists. Velma remembers an old story from the 1700s about a werewolf named Hans. This werewolf could change whenever he wanted by collecting special jewels. Since the gang solves mysteries, Marius hires them to work undercover as circus performers.
Undercover Performers
The next morning, Marius introduces the gang to the other circus artists. Scooby and Shaggy pretend to be animal performers. They team up with Whitney Doubleday, an animal trainer. Whitney tells them Marius wants to get rid of all animal acts to make the circus more modern.
Velma becomes a human cannonball, working with the strong man, Archambault. Fred is a backup trapeze artist. He meets Oliverio, another trapeze artist, and his girlfriend Lena. Oliverio gets jealous when Lena flirts with Fred. Daphne works as a motorcycle stunt artist. She meets the circus clowns, Schmatko and Sisko. Sisko only communicates with a horn. Schmatko tells Daphne he doesn't really want to be a clown. He used to be an actor in the Soviet Union. Later, the werewolf takes Schmatko away.
More Werewolves and a Show
Soon, the gang sees another werewolf stealing things. Then, a second werewolf, wearing Schmatko's uniform, chases them. The gang escapes and tells Marius. But Marius decides the show must go on! Daphne fills in for Schmatko. Fred does a tightrope act to help out.
The show goes very well, especially Scooby's act. Shaggy takes credit for Scooby's performance, telling the audience he is Scooby's 'trainer'. Before Velma can do her act, the two werewolves attack Shaggy and Scooby. Fred and Marius drop the trapeze safety net on them. But when they check, the werewolves are gone! Despite the attack, the audience loves the show, thinking the werewolves were part of it.
Clues and Suspects
The next day, Marius shows the gang the great reviews from the show. The critics called Shaggy the best circus artist. This made Scooby a bit sad because they called him 'Scabby'. When Marius leaves, the gang finds a book about the Ingolstadt werewolves in his office. This makes them wonder if Marius is involved. He had said he knew nothing about werewolves.
Velma finds that the werewolf needs a special jewel called a carbonado. This is the only jewel it doesn't have yet. They ask Marius about the book, but he says it's not his.
Later, Shaggy gets lots of praise from people, which still annoys Scooby. Shaggy gives Scooby a wheelbarrow full of Scooby Snacks to keep him from quitting. Marius tells the gang they will do a private show for Wulfric von Rydingsvard. He is a singer from the band Wülfsmöøon, who Shaggy really likes. Velma then realizes that a carbonado is also known as a black diamond. Wulfric owns a black diamond!
Catching the Werewolves
The gang gets ready to catch the werewolf during the show. But before it starts, Archambault, Lena, and Marius go missing. During the show, the werewolves appear after Scooby's act. Three more werewolves show up, wearing the clothes of the missing artists.
The werewolves manage to steal Wulfric's black diamond. They chase the gang. During the chase, Shaggy pulls off some fur from one werewolf. He finds red fur underneath! Scooby notices that Doubleday's baboon cage is empty. They realize the "werewolves" are actually Doubleday and his trained baboons in costumes! Shaggy uses one of Doubleday's Spanish commands to stop them.
Doubleday tries to run away but is caught by Archambault. Archambault says he was tied up in a shed but broke free. They find the other missing artists there. Doubleday is taken away by the police. But the stolen jewels are nowhere to be found.
The Real Culprit
The next day, the Brancusi circus gets ready to leave Atlantic City. Marius thanks the gang with free passes to any of his circus shows. Archambault wishes Velma luck finding the 'black diamond'. Schmatko tells Daphne he will quit being a clown to follow his dream of acting.
As the circus train leaves, Velma feels something is still wrong. She remembers Archambault called the jewel a 'black diamond', not a 'carbonado'. She also remembers Doubleday saying, "you won't take US that easy," suggesting he had a partner. Velma also noticed that the ropes on Archambault didn't look broken, but cut. She also remembers they only found the werewolf book after Archambault knocked it off a shelf.
Putting all the clues together, the gang realizes Archambault was Doubleday's partner! They chase the train and see Archambault attacking Marius to get the box office money. Scooby and Shaggy jump onto the train. Shaggy apologizes to Scooby for taking credit for his act. They free the baboons to help stop Archambault. They use tranquilizer darts to catch him.
As Archambault is taken away, Marius explains that Doubleday and Archambault had worked for his uncle for years. They were angry when Marius took over and wanted to modernize the circus. When Doubleday was about to get caught, Archambault betrayed him. He wanted to get away with the jewels and the money. At the end, Wulfric arrives and thanks the gang for getting his jewel back. He gives them a private performance!
