Bigelow is a small town in Perry County, Arkansas, United States. It is located in the middle part of Arkansas, close to where the Fourche La Fave River meets the Arkansas River. The community started in 1905 and was first called Esau. Bigelow grew because of the timber industry, which means cutting down trees for wood. However, when the lumber mills closed in 1920, the town's growth slowed down. In 2020, about 352 people lived there.
History of Bigelow
Bigelow was not always known by its current name. Before 1911, it was called "Esau." This community was a few miles southwest of the current town. In 1911, a man named N.P. Bigelow owned a mill on the Fourche River. He built a large, beautiful white house on a hill above the town.
N.P. Bigelow was elected mayor. He then got permission from the state government to change the town's name from Esau to Bigelow. At one time, Bigelow was the biggest town in Perry County. People even voted to move the county seat (the main government office for the county) from Perryville to Bigelow. Bigelow won the vote, but the move never happened.
