Bigland Tarn is a lovely small lake located in Cumbria, a county in the northwest of England. It is found within the famous Lake District National Park, which is known for its beautiful mountains and lakes. This tarn is about 3/4 of a mile (or 1.2 kilometers) southeast of a village called Haverthwaite.
What is a Tarn?
A tarn is a special kind of lake. It is usually a small mountain lake, often formed in a hollow or basin that was carved out by glaciers a very long time ago. The word "tarn" comes from the Old Norse word tjörn, which means "pond".
Location and Size
Bigland Tarn sits at an elevation of about 158 meters (or 518 feet) above sea level. It covers an area of about 5.1 hectares (which is about 12.6 acres). To give you an idea of its size, the tarn measures about 325 meters (1,066 feet) long and 225 meters (738 feet) wide.
