João Ferreira, better known as Bigode (which means "moustache" in Portuguese), was a famous Brazilian footballer. He was born on April 4, 1922, and passed away on July 31, 2003. Bigode played as a left back, a position where players help protect their team's goal. He was also an important part of the Brazilian national team that played in the 1950 FIFA World Cup.

Playing for Clubs
Bigode started his football journey playing for Atlético Mineiro. This club was from his hometown, Belo Horizonte, in the Minas Gerais state of Brazil. He helped Atlético Mineiro win the Campeonato Mineiro championship twice, in 1941 and 1942.
In 1943, Bigode moved to Fluminense, a club in Rio de Janeiro. While playing for Fluminense, he won another important championship, the Campeonato Carioca, in 1946.
After leaving Fluminense in 1949, Bigode joined their rivals, Flamengo, in 1950. He played for Flamengo until 1952. Then, he returned to Fluminense, where he continued to play until he retired from football in 1956.
Playing for Brazil
Bigode played eleven matches for the Brazilian national team between 1949 and 1953. In 1949, he helped Brazil win the South American Championship. This was a big achievement for the team.
He was also part of the Brazilian team that reached the final of the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Brazil played against Uruguay in the final match. The game was held at the Estádio do Maracanã stadium in Brazil. Uruguay won the match 2–1, which was a big surprise and is still remembered as the "Maracanazo".
Later Life and Death
Bigode passed away in Belo Horizonte on July 31, 2003. He had been suffering from breathing problems.
