William Mountford Williamson (born in 1887 – died August 2, 1918) was an English footballer. He played as an outside right, which is a forward position on the far side of the field. Bill played for teams like Leicester Fosse and Stoke in the Football League.

Football Career

Williamson started his football journey at a local amateur club called North Staffs Normads. In 1906, he joined Stoke, a big club in the Football League First Division. He played 8 games for Stoke over two years.

After his time at Stoke, he moved to Crewe Alexandra in 1910. This club was part of the Birmingham & District Football League. He spent another two years playing there.

Later in 1910, Williamson returned to the main English Football League. He joined Leicester Fosse, but only played two games for them. In 1911, he went back to Stoke for a second time. However, he didn't get to play any first-team games. He then left to join Wellington Town.

Life During Wartime

Before the First World War began, Bill Williamson joined the army. He became a soldier in a famous Scottish regiment called the Gordon Highlanders. When the war started in August 1914, Bill was with his army group in Egypt.

After a short time back in the United Kingdom, his group was sent to the Western Front. This was a major battle area in Europe. Bill fought in a big battle called the First Battle of Ypres. During this battle, he was injured in his left hand and left knee.

He was then captured by the German army and became a prisoner of war. Sadly, Bill died on August 2, 1918, at a prisoner-of-war camp in Hamelin, Germany. He passed away from a serious illness known as the Spanish flu. Bill Williamson is remembered and honored at the Cologne Memorial.
