History of Billingsley
Billingsley was first called Cartersville. This name came from the W. W. Carter family. They were the first settlers in the area. The Carter family built a grist mill, a lumber company, and a cotton gin.
As the settlement grew, the Billingsley family became the largest family. So, the town was named after Clement Billingsley. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Clement Billingsley was one of many war veterans from Virginia who moved to what is now Autauga County. When he passed away in 1844, his land and other belongings were shared among his children. This made the family even more important in the county. Clement Billingsley is buried in the Gaines Cemetery in the village.
By the 1880s, Billingsley had a mail stop for stagecoaches. In 1898, a train line from the Mobile and Ohio Railroad was built through the town. This brought a lot of construction and new people. The town grew to have six general stores and other businesses. The local sawmill also tripled its production. Billingsley officially became a town in 1901.
