Bimal Kar (Bengali: বিমল কর) (born September 19, 1921 – died August 26, 2003) was a very famous Bengali writer and novelist. He wrote many stories and novels in the Bengali language.

In 1975, he won the important Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel Asamay. This award is given by Sahitya Akademi, which is India's National Academy of Letters.

Bimal Kar was born on September 19, 1921. His birthplace was North 24-Parganas. As a child, he lived in different places like Jabalpur and Dhanbad. He passed away on August 26, 2003.

Bimal Kar's Writing Career

Bimal Kar wrote many classic stories and novels in Bengali. He also wrote plays about society. He was known for his unique writing styles. For example, he could write amazing stories with almost no talking. He also wrote stories that were mostly made up of conversations.

He understood life in both West Bengal and Chhota Nagpur very well. He also knew a lot about modern Kolkata. A special talent he had was being able to think like a woman when he was writing.

  • He invented a retired magician named Kinkar Kishore Ray. People called him Kikira. Kikira solved mysteries with his two helpers.
  • He also created another detective character named Victor.

Working as a Journalist

After moving to Kolkata, Bimal Kar worked as a journalist. He wrote for newspapers and magazines like Parag and Satyajug.

From 1954 to 1982, he worked with a famous magazine called Desh. His novel Grahan was published there in 1964. His book Asamay, which also appeared in Desh, won him the Sahitya Akademi award in 1975. Bimal Kar also won the Ananda Puraskar in 1967. He received the Saratchandra Award from Calcutta University in 1981.

Besides Desh, he also worked with Shiladitya and Galpapatro magazines.

His Famous Works

Bimal Kar's other popular novels include Dewal, Purna Apurna, Jadubansa, and Balika Badhu. He started a new style of short stories in Bengali. He used simple language that readers loved. He was very good at creating characters and telling stories. Many of his novels were even made into films!
