Bina Shah studied Psychology at Wellesley College in the USA. She also earned a master's degree in Educational Technology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Her first book, Animal Medicine, was a collection of short stories published in 2000. Her first novel, Where They Dream in Blue, came out in 2001. Another novel, The 786 Cybercafé, was published in 2004.
In 2008, her novel Slum Child was released. An Italian version of this book became very popular in Italy. It sold over 20,000 copies and reached number 3 on the bestseller list.
