Biota is a small town in Spain. It is a municipality located in the province of Zaragoza. This province is part of the Aragon region. Biota is found near the Arba de Luesia River. It is also part of an area known as the Cinco Villas Region. Biota covers about 128.8 square kilometers. Around 912 people live there.

Geography of Biota

Biota shares borders with several other towns. To the north and northwest, it borders Uncastillo. Sádaba is located to the west. To the east, you will find Luesia and Asín. Ejea de los Caballeros is to the south.

The Arba de Luesia River flows through Biota. This river is one of the two main branches of the larger Arba River. Also, part of the western border with Ejea de los Caballeros is formed by the Farasdués River. The Farasdués River is a smaller river that flows into the Arba de Luesia.

Within Biota's area, there is a place called the San Bartolomé reservoir. This is a small reservoir. It helps store water from the Bardenas Canal.

History of Biota

Biota is in a very important location. It controls one of the places where people could cross the Arba River. Because of this, a strong fortress or castle was built there long ago. Today, only one defense tower from that castle remains. It reminds us of its past importance.

The town was taken over by the Aragonese king Sancho Ramírez in 1091. This is the first time the name Biota appears in written records. It was mentioned when the king immediately gave the town to Fortún Aznárez in September 1091. For many centuries after that, Biota remained a non-religious lordship. This means it was controlled by powerful families, not by the church.

Local Government in Biota

Biota has a local government that helps manage the town. The leader of the town's government is called the Mayor. Mayors are elected by the people living in Biota. They work to make decisions for the community.
