Kaji Bir Keshar Pande was an important person in the Kingdom of Nepal. He was a politician, a military officer, and a courtier. He belonged to the Gora Pande family from Gorkha. His father was Kaji Ranajit Pande.
Bir Keshar Pande owned a large house called Lazimpat Durbar. Just like the Thapa family lived in Thapathali, the Pande family lived in Lazimpat. Bir Keshar Pande was killed at Lazimpat Durbar during the Kot massacre on September 14, 1846. After his death, his house was taken over by Kaji Mama Col. Tribikram Singh Thapa. He lived there for 28 years until he moved to Varanasi in 1875.
Family Background
Bir Keshar Pande was part of the Gora (White) Pande group within the Pande family. His father was Kaji Ranajit Pande. His grandfather was Kaji Tularam Pande, who died during the Battle of Kathmandu.
His father, Ranajit Pande, was once a top minister called Mulkaji. Bir Keshar's uncle, Bhotu Pande, was a military officer. He fought in the Sino-Nepalese War.
The Kot Massacre
The Kot Massacre was a very important and sad event in Nepal's history. It happened on September 14, 1846. This event led to the Rana family taking power in Nepal.
Queen Rajya Lakshmi Devi was very upset. Her trusted general had been killed. She wanted to find out who did it. She called all the important noblemen to an urgent meeting. This meeting took place at the Kot courtyard.
During the meeting, fighting broke out. Kapardar Bir Keshar Pande was suspected by the Queen. She ordered Abhiman Singh Rana Magar, the army chief, to deal with him. However, Abhiman Singh knew who the real killer was. He hesitated.
Suddenly, Jung Bahadur Rana shot Abhiman Singh. As he was dying, General Abhiman Singh shouted that Jung Bahadur was the killer. A big fight started among everyone present. Swords and knives were used.
Jung Bahadur had his troops ready nearby. His soldiers quickly stopped the fighting. They killed many people who were against him. After the struggle, many important nobles were dead. The Pande and Thapa families lost many members that day. Jung Bahadur Rana then went after other nobles across the country.
Connections with the Thapas
Bhimsen Thapa was a very powerful prime minister. He had three wives. His only son died when he was young in 1796. Bhimsen Thapa had three daughters: Lalita Devi, Janak Kumari, and Dirgha Kumari.
These daughters married into the Pande family. Lalita Devi married Uday Bahadur Pande. Janak Kumari married Shamsher Bahadur Pande. Dirgha Kumari married Dal Bahadur Pande. Uday Bahadur and Colonel Shamsher Bahadur were the sons of Kaji Bir Keshar Pande. Sardar Dal Bahadur was the son of Bir Keshar's cousin, Garud Dhoj Pande. Both Bir Keshar and Garud Dhoj were sons of Mulkaji Ranajit Pande.
