Bird's Fort was an important community in early Texas. It was located north of what is now Arlington, Texas. In 1841, John Neely Bryan started the city of Dallas. He invited people living at Bird's Fort to move to his new city.

The Story of Bird's Fort

Major Jonathan Bird built a fort here in September 1841. It was located along the Trinity River. The fort was built to protect settlers on the Texas frontier. This happened after a battle called Village Creek in May 1841.

Soldiers stayed at Bird's Fort until March 1842. They left because there was a danger of attack from the Comanche people.

Important Meetings at the Fort

Bird's Fort was also a place for important meetings. In 1843, leaders from Native American tribes met there. They talked with settlers from the Red River area. They worked to create a treaty, which is a formal agreement.

On August 6, 1843, a group called the Snively Expedition ended at Fort Bird. This expedition was a military operation that did not go as planned.

Bird's Fort was officially recognized as a Texas historic site in 1936. This means it is an important place from the past.

How Bird's Fort Helped Develop the County

Birdville, Texas was the first settlement in Tarrant County. It is now part of Haltom City. Birdville was named after Bird's Fort, showing its importance in the region's early days.
