Bird Key is a special island in Sarasota Bay, Florida. It's located just south of the John Ringling Causeway, which connects mainland Sarasota to St. Armands Key. This island was once a small piece of land. It was connected to the Ringling Causeway by its own tree-lined road.
Bird Key used to be the home of John Ringling North. He was the nephew of the famous circus owner, John Ringling. In the late 1950s, the island was made much bigger. Workers used a process called "dredge and fill" to add more land. Now, Bird Key is about 250 acres (1 square kilometer) in size. It has become one of the most fancy neighborhoods on Florida's West Coast.
