Birgitte Hjort Sørensen (born January 16, 1982) is a famous actress from Denmark. She is known for her roles in theater, television, and movies. She has been nominated for several major acting awards in Denmark, including three Robert Awards.

Sørensen was born in Hillerød, Denmark. She decided to become an actress after seeing the musical Chicago in London. She studied at the Danish National School of Performing Arts. Her first acting job was a small part in the TV series The Eagle in 2005.

She later starred as Roxie Hart in a production of Chicago in Copenhagen and on the West End in London. Her big break came when she played journalist Katrine Fønsmark in the popular political TV show Borgen.

Early Life and Education

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen was born on January 16, 1982, in Hillerød, Denmark, and grew up in Birkerød. Both of her parents are doctors. She has two older sisters.

When she was young, she thought about becoming a doctor like her parents. However, after working with her mother in a hospital ward for the elderly, she decided it was not the right career for her.

A school trip to London when she was 19 changed her life. She saw a performance of the musical Chicago and was amazed. She said in an interview, "It was so amazing and exciting, and I sat there thinking, 'I want to be on that stage one day.'" This experience inspired her to become an actress.

She attended the Danish National School of Performing Arts to train as an actress. While she was a student, she got her first role as a receptionist in the TV show The Eagle.

Acting Career

Theater Success

In 2007, Sørensen played the main role of Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago at a theater in Copenhagen. The show was a huge success and was praised by critics. For her performance, she won a Reumert Prize, a major Danish theater award. The next year, she played the same role in London's famous theater district, the West End.

In 2013, she performed in the play Coriolanus in London with actor Tom Hiddleston.

Breakthrough with Borgen

In 2010, Sørensen became famous for her role as Katrine Fønsmark in the TV show Borgen. The show is a political drama about Denmark's first female prime minister. Sørensen played a smart and determined journalist.

To prepare for the role, she spent a summer with real television news reporters. The show was a hit in Denmark and also became very popular in other countries, especially the United Kingdom. Her role in Borgen earned her a nomination for a Robert Award for Best Actress.

International Roles

Sørensen has also appeared in many international movies and TV shows. In 2015, she played Karsi, a chieftain of the Wildlings, in an episode of the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones.

The same year, she starred in the movie Pitch Perfect 2. She played Kommissar, the leader of a German singing group that competes against the main characters.

In 2016, she was in the HBO television series Vinyl, which was produced by the famous director Martin Scorsese. She also acted on Broadway in New York City in the play Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
