Birgitte Hjort Sørensen (born on January 16, 1982) is a talented Danish actress. She has been nominated for several important Danish acting awards, including three Robert Awards and one Bodil Award.

Birgitte was born in Hillerød, Denmark, and grew up in Birkerød. She became interested in acting after seeing the musical Chicago in London when she was in school. She later studied acting at the Danish National School of Performing Arts. Birgitte started her acting career in 2005 with a small role in the TV series The Eagle. She then played the main character, Roxie Hart, in a Copenhagen production of Chicago, and later in London. Birgitte became widely known for her role as the journalist Katrine Fønsmark in the political TV drama Borgen, which aired from 2010 to 2013 and returned in 2022.

Birgitte's Early Life and First Roles

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen was born in Hillerød on January 16, 1982. She spent her childhood in Birkerød. Both of her parents are doctors, and she has two older sisters. She went to Bistrup School and later Øregård Gymnasium. At school, she was in charge of the student council and edited the school magazine.

When she was a teenager, Birgitte decided not to become a doctor like her parents. She realized this after spending time with her mother at a hospital ward for older people. She felt it was too sad to see so many people who needed help with basic things.

Discovering Acting

When Birgitte was 19, she went on a school trip to London. There, she watched the musical Chicago in the West End. This show really inspired her to become an actress. She later said that she thought, "I want to be on that stage one day."

To learn more about acting, she joined a short musical school program. This program gave her a six-month introduction to musical theater. She then continued her studies at the Danish National School of Performing Arts.

While still a student in 2005, Birgitte got her first acting job. She played a receptionist in the TV series The Eagle. Her school did not allow students to work, so she pretended to be sick to take the role.

Two years later, in 2007, she played the lead role of Roxie Hart in Chicago at the Det Ny Teater in Copenhagen. The musical was very popular and earned her a Reumert Award. In 2008, she played Roxie Hart again in the West End production of Chicago in London.

Birgitte's Acting Career

In 2010, Birgitte became very well-known for her role as Katrine Fønsmark in the Danish political drama Borgen. This show was about Denmark's first female prime minister. To get ready for the role, she spent a summer learning from TV news teams.

Birgitte was praised for playing a strong female character in the show. She became famous internationally, especially in the United Kingdom. For the third season of Borgen, she was nominated for a Robert Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role on Television.

She also received her first nomination for the Robert Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her part in the action film Ved verdens ende (2009). In 2012, Birgitte played the painter Marie Krøyer in the movie The Passion of Marie. This role earned her another Best Actress nomination at the Robert Awards. The next year, she acted in the play Coriolanus with Tom Hiddleston in London.

Later Roles in TV and Film

In 2015, Birgitte appeared in the "Hardhome" episode of the popular HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones. She played Karsi, a leader of the wildlings. In the same year, she starred with Anna Kendrick in the musical comedy movie Pitch Perfect 2. She played Kommissar, the leader of a rival German singing group. She was also nominated for a Bodil Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Someone You Love.

Birgitte played Ingrid, a friend of artist Andy Warhol, in Martin Scorsese's HBO TV series, Vinyl (2016). Later that year, she performed on Broadway in the play Les Liaisons Dangereuses. She returned to her role as Katrine Fønsmark in Borgen in 2022 when the show came back for a fourth season on Netflix.
