Birgitte's Early Life and First Roles
Birgitte Hjort Sørensen was born in Hillerød on January 16, 1982. She spent her childhood in Birkerød. Both of her parents are doctors, and she has two older sisters. She went to Bistrup School and later Øregård Gymnasium. At school, she was in charge of the student council and edited the school magazine.
When she was a teenager, Birgitte decided not to become a doctor like her parents. She realized this after spending time with her mother at a hospital ward for older people. She felt it was too sad to see so many people who needed help with basic things.
Discovering Acting
When Birgitte was 19, she went on a school trip to London. There, she watched the musical Chicago in the West End. This show really inspired her to become an actress. She later said that she thought, "I want to be on that stage one day."
To learn more about acting, she joined a short musical school program. This program gave her a six-month introduction to musical theater. She then continued her studies at the Danish National School of Performing Arts.
While still a student in 2005, Birgitte got her first acting job. She played a receptionist in the TV series The Eagle. Her school did not allow students to work, so she pretended to be sick to take the role.
Two years later, in 2007, she played the lead role of Roxie Hart in Chicago at the Det Ny Teater in Copenhagen. The musical was very popular and earned her a Reumert Award. In 2008, she played Roxie Hart again in the West End production of Chicago in London.
