Birgitte's Early Life and Dreams
Birgitte Hjort Sørensen was born in Hillerød on 16 January 1982. She grew up in Birkerød. Her parents are both doctors, and she has two older sisters. She went to school at Bistrup School and later Øregård Gymnasium. At her high school, she was even the head of the student council and edited the school magazine!
When she was a teenager, Birgitte decided she didn't want to become a doctor like her parents. She once spent time with her mother at a hospital ward for older people. She found it very sad to see so many people who needed help with basic things. She said it was "traumatising" and she felt too much of their sadness.
Finding Her Passion for Acting
When Birgitte was 19, she went on a school trip to London. There, she saw the musical Chicago playing in the West End. This show really inspired her to become an actress. She told The Guardian newspaper that it was "so amazing" and she thought, "I want to be on that stage one day."
To follow her dream, she joined a short musical theatre program. Then, she went on to study at the Danish National School of Performing Arts. While she was still a student in 2005, she got her first acting job as a receptionist in the TV series The Eagle. Her school didn't allow students to work, so Birgitte pretended to be sick to take the role!
Two years later, in 2007, she played the lead role of Roxie Hart in Chicago at the Det Ny Teater in Copenhagen. The musical was a huge success and made a lot of money. Birgitte even won a Reumert prize for her performance. She then played Roxie Hart again in the West End production in London in 2008.
Birgitte's Acting Career Highlights
In 2010, Birgitte became very famous for her role as Katrine Fønsmark in the Danish TV show Borgen. This show was about a fictional (made-up) political world and the rise of Denmark's first female prime minister. To get ready for the role, Birgitte spent a summer learning from real TV news teams.
She was praised for playing a strong female character and became known internationally, especially in the United Kingdom. For the third season of Borgen, she was nominated for a Robert Award for Best Actress.
Big Roles in Film and TV
Birgitte was also nominated for her first Robert Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the action film Ved verdens ende (2009). In 2012, she played the painter Marie Krøyer in the movie The Passion of Marie, which earned her another Best Actress nomination.
In 2015, Birgitte appeared in the popular HBO fantasy show Game of Thrones. She played Karsi, a leader of a group called the wildlings, in the episode "Hardhome". That same year, she also starred in the musical comedy movie Pitch Perfect 2. She played Kommissar, the leader of a rival German singing group.
Birgitte also played Ingrid, a muse of the famous artist Andy Warhol, in Martin Scorsese's HBO TV series, Vinyl (2016). Later that year, she performed on Broadway in New York City in the play Les Liaisons Dangereuses. She returned to her famous role as Katrine Fønsmark in Borgen in 2022 when the show came back for a fourth season on Netflix.
