Discovering Birmingham Gardens

This section will tell you more about Birmingham Gardens, from its early days to what it's like now.

A Look Back: How Birmingham Gardens Began

The area known as Birmingham Gardens was first divided into smaller plots of land in the 1930s. This means people started to buy and build homes there.

The suburb grew even more in the 1960s. Many people were attracted to the area because the land was more affordable.

The name "Birmingham Gardens" was chosen by Mr. T.M. Burke. He was the person who first divided the land into lots. He named it after the city of Birmingham in England.

Originally, a company called Newcastle Wallsend Coal Co owned this land. Later, it was sold to another company called Commonwealth Oil Refineries.

Life in Birmingham Gardens Today

Today, Birmingham Gardens is a quiet suburb with a mix of residents. Many people living here are over 55 years old.

Because it is so close to the University of Newcastle, many university students also rent homes in the area. They find it a convenient place to live while studying.

While there are many older residents and students, some families have also chosen to make Birmingham Gardens their home.

The suburb also has a nice place for everyone to enjoy called Harold Myers Park. This park has play equipment, which is great for kids and families.
