The Bismarck (Malus domestica 'Bismarck') is a special kind of apple. It's mostly used for cooking because it has a sharp, tangy taste. People often mash it into a puree when they cook with it.

History of the Bismarck Apple

The exact beginning of the Bismarck apple is a bit of a mystery! There are a few different ideas about where this apple first came from.

One idea is that it started in a place called Bismarck in Tasmania, Australia. This town is now known as Collinsvale and used to be a German settlement. Another idea suggests it was grown by a German settler named F. Fricke in Carisbrooke, Victoria, Australia. A third theory says it might have come from Canterbury, New Zealand.

No matter where it truly began, the Bismarck apple was grown in Victoria, Australia, and also in England and other parts of Europe until the 1930s.

About the Bismarck Apple Tree

The Bismarck apple tree can grow quite large. It usually spreads out to about 25 feet wide and stands about 15 feet tall. These trees produce many apples. The apples are medium-sized and have a skin that is a mix of green and red.

This apple is not very common today. You won't find it growing everywhere around the world. In 1887, the tree and its fruit were given a special award called the RHS First Class Certificate. This award shows how highly it was thought of at the time.
