History of Bison

Bison was officially started in 1907. It was named after the American bison, which are large animals that used to roam freely in this area. A post office opened in Bison in the same year. In 1908, Bison became the county seat for Perkins County. This means it became the main town where the county government is located.

Bison is located in a part of South Dakota that is mostly land. The town covers an area of about 0.99 square miles (2.57 square kilometers).

Location and Nearby Features

The town is about six miles south of the South Fork of the Grand River. It is also close to where Thunder Butte Creek begins. Just south of Bison, you can find the Grand River National Grassland. This is a large area of protected grasslands.
