A Blaa (also called Waterford Blaa) is a special kind of soft, white bread bun. It is very famous in Waterford, Ireland. Blaas are still made in Waterford today.

Blaas come in two main types: "soft" and "crusty." Soft blaas are a little sweet and have a light, firm texture that melts in your mouth. Crusty blaas are crunchy when you first bite them. Then, they become chewy with a mild malt taste. The dark crust gives them a nice slightly bitter flavor.

People usually eat blaas for breakfast with butter. They are also popular at other times of the day with different fillings. A common breakfast in Waterford is the "breakfast blaa." This includes egg, bacon, and sausage inside the blaa. It's often chosen over a regular breakfast roll.

About 12,000 blaas are sold every day! Four bakeries still make them: Walsh's Bakehouse, Kilmacow Bakery, Barron's Bakery & Coffee House, and Hickey's Bakery. Only two of these bakeries are in Waterford City. Blaas are best eaten fresh, within a few hours of buying them.

The History of the Blaa

Some people believe the blaa first came to Waterford in the late 1600s. This was supposedly brought by the Huguenots, who were French Protestants. However, this idea is debated. White flour was not widely used until the Industrial Revolution, which happened much later.

What Makes a Blaa Special?

Blaas are sometimes confused with another type of bun called a bap. But blaas are different! They are square-shaped, softer, and more doughy. The easiest way to tell a blaa apart is by the white flour dusted on top before it's baked.

Protected Status

On November 19, 2013, the Waterford blaa received a special award. It was given "Protected Geographical Indication status" by the European Commission. This means that only blaas made in the Waterford area can be called "Waterford Blaa." This protects its unique quality and origin.
