The black-browed barbet (Psilopogon oorti) is a very colorful bird found in parts of Asia. It lives mainly in the forests of Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. These birds prefer to live in forests high up, usually between 600 and 2000 meters (about 2,000 to 6,500 feet) above sea level.

Scientists have listed the black-browed barbet as a species of "Least Concern". This means it is not currently in danger of disappearing. It has a wide range where it lives, and its population seems to be stable.

What is a Black-Browed Barbet?

The black-browed barbet is a type of Asian barbet. These birds are known for their bright colors and often loud calls. They are usually found in tropical and subtropical forests.

How Does It Look?

The black-browed barbet is mostly bright green. It has a yellow throat with blue borders. You can spot black streaks just above its eyes, like eyebrows. It also has striking red patches above its beak, on its face (lores), throat, and the back of its neck (nape).

One female barbet that was measured was about 21.5 centimeters (8.5 inches) long. It weighed around 62 grams (2.2 ounces).

Where Do Black-Browed Barbets Live?

Black-browed barbets live in the mountains and certain types of forests. These forests are called dipterocarp forests. You can find them in western Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia. They like to live at altitudes between 600 and 2000 meters (about 2,000 to 6,500 feet).

What Do Black-Browed Barbets Do?

These birds are active during the day. They spend their time looking for food and raising their young.

What Do They Eat?

Black-browed barbets eat both insects and fruits. They usually search for their food in the upper and middle parts of the forest trees. This area is called the canopy.

When Do They Have Babies?

In Sumatra, black-browed barbets usually breed from February to November. In Malaysia, their breeding season is from March to June. Like many birds, they build their nests in holes found in trees.
