Black-flanked tree frog
Scientific classification

Boana nigra, also known as the black-flanked tree frog, is a type of frog that belongs to the Hylidae family. This special frog is only found in Ecuador, a country in South America. Scientists have discovered it living high up in the mountains, at elevations from about 910 to 1,847 meters above sea level.

What Does It Look Like?

The black-flanked tree frog has some interesting features! Adult male frogs are usually about 3.8 to 4.6 centimeters long, measured from their nose to their bottom. Female frogs are a bit bigger, measuring about 5.6 to 7.6 centimeters long.

These frogs can be brown, reddish-brown, or even dark brown on their backs. They often have darker spots that help them blend in with their surroundings. A key feature is their black sides and black stripes, which is how they got their name. The skin between their toes, called webs, can be either black or a bright orange color.

Where Does Its Name Come From?

The name of this frog, both its common English name "black-flanked tree frog" and its scientific name Boana nigra, comes from the Latin word for "black." This makes sense because of the black markings on its sides!
