The first season of the Black Clover anime TV show was made by director Tatsuya Yoshihara and the company Pierrot. This season is based on the first nine books (chapters 1 to 75) of Yūki Tabata's Black Clover manga comic series. However, episode 13 tells a new story not from the manga, and episode 29 is a summary of past events.

The story follows the first adventures of Asta and his friends, the Black Bulls, in the Clover Kingdom. Asta, who can't use magic, gets a special magic spellbook called a grimoire. He joins the Black Bulls, a group of magic knights, because he wants to become the new Wizard King. During his journey, he explores a secret dungeon and meets Mars, a magic knight from the Diamond Kingdom. Later, Asta is captured when bad magic users, working for a group called the Eye of the Midnight Sun, attack the capital city with zombies. After Asta is saved, he teams up with a fellow Black Bull and later his captain to fight against people who are kidnapping children. The Black Bulls then travel to an Underwater Temple, where they face many challenges to find a special magic stone that the Eye of the Midnight Sun is also looking for.

The first season first aired in Japan on TV Tokyo from October 3, 2017, to September 25, 2018. In North America, Crunchyroll and Funimation made the series available in English. Crunchyroll showed the episodes online at the same time as Japan, and Funimation created an English version that aired on Adult Swim's Toonami from December 2, 2017, to January 6, 2019.

The first season of Black Clover uses eight different songs for its opening and closing themes. The first opening song is "Distant Future" by Kankaku Piero, and the first closing song is "Blue Flame" by Itowokashi. These were used for the first 13 episodes. For episodes 14 to 27, the opening song was "Paint It Black" by Bish, and the closing song was "Amazing Dreams" by Swanky Dank. From episodes 28 to 39, the opening theme was "Black Rover" by Vickeblanka, and the closing theme was "Black to the dreamlight" by Empire. For the rest of the season, the opening song was "Guess Who Is Back" by Koda Kumi, and the closing song was "Four" by Faky. In episode 50, Megumi Han sang "Four" as her character, Kahono.
