Black Hawk, also spelled Blackhawk, is a small community in Carroll County, Mississippi, United States. It is not a city or town with its own government. You can find it about 20 kilometers southeast of Greenwood. Even though it's not a city, Black Hawk has its own postal code, which is 38923.
History of Black Hawk
Black Hawk is located near a stream called Abiaca Creek. The community was named after a Choctaw chief. Long ago, Black Hawk was a busy place. It had an academy, which was a type of school. There was also a grist mill, where grain was ground into flour.
The community also had two churches and a shop that made carriages. A branch of the Merchant's and Farmer's Bank of Lexington, Mississippi was also located here. A post office served the community for many years. It operated under the name Black Hawk from 1837 to 1963. Then, it was called Black Hawk Rural Station from 1963 to 1973.
