The Black Hawk Museum and Lodge is a cool historic building in Rock Island, Illinois. It's located inside the Black Hawk State Historic Site. This special lodge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It's also part of a group of important state park lodges in Illinois.

Discovering the Black Hawk State Historic Site

The Black Hawk State Historic Site was created a long time ago, in 1927. The lodge itself was built a few years later, in 1934. It was a project of the Civilian Conservation Corps, a group that helped people find jobs during tough economic times. They built many important structures across the country.

Exploring the Hauberg Indian Museum

Inside the lodge, you'll find the John Hauberg Museum of Native American Life. It first opened its doors in 1939. The museum's collection started with items gathered by Dr. John Hauberg. He was a kind person from Rock Island and also the president of Augustana College.

Learning About the Sauk and Meskwaki Tribes

The museum tells the amazing story of the Sauk and Meskwaki tribes. These tribes lived in the area a long time ago, in a village called Saukenuk. It was one of the biggest Native American villages in North America!

What You Can See at the Museum

The museum has cool displays showing how the tribes lived. You can see models of their winter and summer homes. There are also dioramas, which are like 3D scenes, that show what life was like for these people from 1750 to 1830.

You'll find real items from their daily lives, like trade goods, jewelry, and household tools. One of the most impressive things is a huge statue of Black Hawk. It weighs 18 tonnes! This statue was made in 1892 by a Welsh artist named David Richards.
