Discovering the Black Hawk State Historic Site
The Black Hawk State Historic Site is a large area that was set up in 1927. It helps people learn about the history of the land. The Black Hawk Lodge building itself was built a few years later, in 1934.
How the Lodge Was Built
The lodge was built by a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps. This group was created during the 1930s to help people find jobs. They worked on many projects, including building parks and lodges like this one. Their work helped create many beautiful and lasting structures across the country.
Exploring the Hauberg Indian Museum
Inside the Black Hawk Lodge, you will find the John Hauberg Museum of Native American Life. This museum first opened its doors in 1939. It holds a wonderful collection of items that tell a story.
The Museum's Collection
The collection was started by Dr. John Hauberg. He was a kind person from Rock Island who loved to help his community. He also used to be the president of Augustana College. The museum teaches visitors about the Sauk and Meskwaki tribes. These tribes once lived in this area.
Life in Saukenuk Village
The museum shows what life was like in their village, called Saukenuk. This village was one of the largest Native American villages in North America. You can see models of the winter and summer houses the tribes used. There are also detailed scenes, called dioramas, that show how people lived between 1750 and 1830.
Amazing Artifacts and Art
The museum has many real items from that time. These include trade goods, beautiful jewelry, and things people used every day in their homes. A very special part of the collection is a huge statue of Black Hawk. This statue weighs 18 tonnes! It was made in 1892 by a sculptor from Wales named David Richards.
