A Look at the History
The Black Hawk Powwow Grounds have been used for a very long time, since the 1800s. The Ho-Chunk people, also known as the Winnebago Tribe, have used these grounds for important ceremonies and other community gatherings. These events often include dancing, singing, and celebrating their culture and traditions.
Right next to the grounds, there is a special marker. This marker honors a brave Ho-Chunk hero named Mitchell Red Cloud, Jr.. He was born in Hatfield, Wisconsin, which is part of Komensky. Mitchell Red Cloud, Jr. was the grandson of a Ho-Chunk chief, a leader of his people. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, which is the highest military award in the United States, for his incredible bravery during the Korean War.
