What Happens in the Story?
Cat and Pedro's New Start
Cat and Pedro decide to work together. They want to earn money by acting and playing the violin. Cat feels she needs to contribute. Pedro chooses to join her on this new adventure. Syd, a friend, is sad to see Cat leave again. But he understands it is important for her.
Adventures in Jamaica
Cat and Pedro travel to Jamaica. There, they are shocked to see that slavery is still common. This means people are treated as property. They are very worried when they meet Mr. Hawkins. He used to own Pedro. Mr. Hawkins believes that slavery is fair. He thinks Pedro still belongs to him.
A Dangerous Encounter
After Cat performs on stage, Mr. Hawkins bothers her. He then takes her away against her will. At his large farm, Cat becomes very sick. She catches a disease called malaria. While she is still unwell, a character named Billy helps her. He rescues Cat from the farm.
Fighting for Freedom
Billy makes Cat acquire a person who is enslaved. Pedro is very upset by this at first. But he soon understands Cat's difficult situation. Later, Cat gets involved in a movement for freedom. Pedro tells her to leave for her safety. He decides to stay and help others. He wants them to gain their rights and freedom. Cat is sad to leave Pedro behind. But she knows she must go. So, she and Billy leave Jamaica together.
