Discovering Black Rock

Black Rock might have been part of a group of islands called the "Aurora Islands." These islands were first reported in this area by a ship named Aurora in 1762.

Charting the Rock

Later, in 1927, scientists and explorers mapped Black Rock. This was done by people from the Discovery Investigations. They used a ship called the William Scoresby to chart the area. Charting means making detailed maps of the sea and land.

Who Owns Black Rock?

The country of Argentina believes that many islands in this area belong to them. This includes Black Rock and Shag Rocks.

The Falklands War

In 1982, a conflict called the Falklands War took place. This war was fought between Britain and Argentina. It was not only about the Falkland Islands. It was also about other territories like South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Black Rock and Shag Rocks are important because of their location. They are on the route from the Falkland Islands to South Georgia Island. These rocks sit on a raised part of the ocean floor called the Scotia Ridge.
