Black Shawl, or Tasina Sapewin, was a respected woman of the Oglala Lakota people. She became the second wife of the famous warrior, Crazy Horse, in 1871. She was related to the well-known leader Spotted Tail and was the sister of Red Feather.

Black Shawl's Life
Black Shawl was known for her special skills in healing. Elders of her community sent her to help Crazy Horse after he was injured. She was especially good at treating wounds, including those from bullets.
When she was twenty-four, Black Shawl was suggested as a possible wife for Crazy Horse. This was considered a bit late for a first marriage at the time. Crazy Horse was twenty-eight when their families discussed their marriage.
Her Family
In 1871, Black Shawl and Crazy Horse had a daughter. They named her They Are Afraid of Her. Sadly, their daughter passed away at the age of three. It is believed she died from a serious illness called cholera. Black Shawl also became sick with cholera but was treated by a doctor named Valentine McGillycuddy.
Crazy Horse and Black Shawl shared a long and happy relationship. It lasted longer than his other partnerships. People said they were "sociable in the tipi," which meant they had a peaceful and joyful home life. Black Shawl fully supported Crazy Horse in his life as a warrior.
Her Passing
Black Shawl lived until 1927. She passed away during a widespread outbreak of influenza, also known as the flu.

Black Shawl's story has been told in films. The actress Suzan Ball played her in the 1955 movie Chief Crazy Horse.
