Charles Chen's Career Journey
Playing Basketball
When Charles Chen was 18, he joined the Chinese Taipei junior national basketball team. He played in the 1995 ABC Under-18 Championship. His team finished in 5th place.
Even though he was 190 centimeters tall, which is not very tall for a basketball player, Chen played close to the basket. He looked up to Charles Barkley, another great player who was also not the tallest. This is why Chen chose "Charles" as his English name.
In 1999, he played for the B national team in the William Jones Cup. Later, while playing for a club in Singapore, he got a serious injury. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament (a knee ligament) for the second time. This injury sadly ended his basketball playing career early.
Founding a Basketball League
In 2020, Charles Chen helped create a new professional basketball league in Taiwan. It is called P. League+. He started this league with several teams, including the Taipei Fubon Braves and Formosa Dreamers. He served as the league's first CEO and founder.
Becoming an Entertainer
After his basketball career, Charles Chen became a performing artist. He hosted many popular variety shows on TV. People often call him "Blackie" because of his darker skin. This nickname also sounds a bit like Jackie Chan, and both of them have trained in judo. Charles Chen even earned a blue belt in judo.
He married singer Christine Fan in Taipei on May 7, 2011. They had been together for 10 years before getting engaged in 2010.
Charles Chen also worked as the team leader and head of marketing for the Taiwan Beer Basketball Team. In 2008, he directed a documentary film called Attitude (態度). This film showed the team's journey to win the Super Basketball League championship. The documentary was very popular and received many awards in Taiwan. Many people believe it is one of the best sports documentaries from Taiwan.
He has also been a TV personality and host for several shows. Charles Chen and his wife, Christine Fan, also started the Love Life campaign. This campaign aims to help people and spread positive messages.
